Grinding vs. Removal — Two Different Jobs

There are two ways to deal with a stump, and the right one depends on what you're doing with the ground. Stump grinding uses a cutting wheel to chip the stump down several inches below grade, leaving grindings you can rake off or use as mulch and soil you can seed or sod right over — perfect for lawns, landscaping and replanting. Stump removal (grubbing) pulls the entire stump and root ball out of the ground — the right call when you're pouring a slab, building, or need a truly clean surface where nothing can rot and settle later.

One Stump or a Whole Field

We handle everything from a single stubborn stump in a Schertz backyard to a whole field of stumps left after land clearing or a storm. If we've just mulched or cleared your property, stump work is a natural add-on — tell us up front whether you want to mow over the ground or build on it, and we'll grind or grub accordingly. Cleanup and backfilling the holes is available so you're left with a finished surface, not a minefield.

Stump ground below grade

Grinding is the right choice when you want to:

  • Put in lawn, garden or landscaping over the spot
  • Replant a tree nearby
  • Clear a trip hazard and mowing obstacle
  • Avoid the bigger dig that full removal needs

Common Questions

How deep do you grind a stump?

Typically several inches below grade — enough to seed, sod or landscape over the top. If you're replanting a tree in the same spot or building, we can grind deeper or grub the stump out entirely.

Grinding or full removal — which do I need?

Grind if you're putting in lawn or landscaping and just want the stump gone from view and from your mower. Remove (grub) if you're building, pouring concrete, or need the roots completely out so nothing settles later.

Can you grind a lot of stumps at once?

Yes — from one stump to a whole field left after clearing or storms. Large counts are quoted as a group. If we cleared the land, stump work is an easy add-on to the same job.

What happens to the grindings and the hole?

Grindings can be raked off or left as mulch, your choice. On removals we can backfill the hole with soil so you're left with a finished, level surface ready to seed.
